Dear Neighbors,
From classrooms to cultural celebrations, this past week reflected the heart of our ward: learning, service, and community coming together across every corner of the neighborhood. I joined Cubs Charities and the leadership team of McCutcheon STEAM Elementary to give a tour of the school and showcase the incredible work within its classrooms. It’s always a pleasure to spend time with some of my favorite small humans and connect meaningful resources to the schools serving our community.
I also had the opportunity to join Lawrence Hall for an immersive exploration of the foster care journey. The experience was deeply moving and offered a window into the realities many vulnerable young people face, as well as the care, stability, and support they need to thrive. I want to extend a special thank you to Lawrence Hall board member and neighbor, David Hopkins, who hosted guests for this event! I encourage you to learn more about Lawrence Hall’s important work by visiting their website, they embody how strengthening our community means showing up for young people in every circumstance. |

It’s officially the year of the Fire Horse! I was honored to join neighbors across the ward for our annual Lunar New Year celebrations. I kicked off the day at the Chinese Mutual Aid Association’s (CMAA) Lunar New Year celebration and 45th anniversary - Congratulations again on celebrating 45 years CMAA! I also attended the South-East Asia Center's Lunar New Year banquet at Furama Restaurant for a delicious meal alongside Mayor Brandon Johnson and other elected officials, and even had an opportunity to participate in the traditional lion dance offering! I wrapped up the Lunar New Year celebrations at the annual Argyle Lunar New Year parade. Seeing the vibrant floats and performances from local organizations and our local schools, including Uplift, McCutcheon, and Goudy, was truly inspiring. These celebrations highlight the diversity, culture, and togetherness that make our community so special. I wish everyone celebrating a joyful, peaceful, and prosperous Lunar New Year! |

| | As we wrap up an incredible month celebrating Black excellence, I was proud to join my colleagues and fellow Black creatives at the annual Black Creativity Gala at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. Black Creativity has long honored the culture, contributions, and innovation of African Americans while uplifting the next generation of leaders in STEAM. It was a beautiful reminder of the innovation, talent and contributions that African Americans have made and continue to make that benefit our entire globe. |
|
| | Monday we kicked things off with our first “Ward Night Out” of the year at a true gem in the ward, Demera restaurant. Neighbors came out to mingle, enjoy delicious sambusas and beet salad, access valuable resources, and even play a little mini Uno. We’re so grateful for the beautiful turnout and want to give a huge thank you to Tigist and the Demera team for hosting us! We truly appreciate their partnership and hospitality and encourage every neighbor to support this Uptown staple. |

Shoutout to Blaine Elementary, an architectural gem and vibrant space for learning in the ward who invited me to share my experience as their elected official. These conversations create meaningful opportunities to demystify local government, help young people understand how public decisions are made, and how they can participate in shaping their communities. I was overjoyed by the students’ curiosity and engagement throughout our discussion. This awesome visit reinforced the importance of introducing civic education early and engaging future leaders in public service. Special thanks to Ms. Nash, the amazing 8th graders, and Principal Russell for this opportunity! |

As part of our celebration of Black excellence this month, we stopped by Uptown Chamber of Commerce's Black-Owned Business Networking Event at Bodi Shak for their Black networking event. It was powerful to see entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals gathered in one space to build community, share ideas, and support one another. Spaces like these remind us that Black leadership and collaboration continue to thrive right here in our ward.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
In honor of Black History Month, we’re proud to continue highlighting Black-owned businesses that help shape the culture, creativity, and community of the 46th Ward. These entrepreneurs are not only building successful businesses, they’re creating spaces rooted in connection, excellence, and joy. This week, we’re zooming in on Mind, Body, Defense, A husband-and-wife-owned and operated small business located at 4143 N. Broadway in Buena Park. Opened in 2016, Mind Body Defense will celebrate its 10th anniversary of empowering students by improving their fitness through purposeful action. Torriente Toliver, the owner and head instructor, is a former high school English teacher and a lifelong martial artist. He holds black belts in Pagoda Ryu, Youn Wha Ryu, and Tsai Family Kung Fu/Combined Universal Martial Applications (CUMA). By fusing various disciplines with traditional kickboxing pad work, Torriente has developed a unique method for teaching martial arts to adults in a non-traditional setting. He believes that self-defense is as much about protecting one's state of mind as it is about physical safety, helping students empower themselves and one another.

| | It has come to our attention that large amounts of food are being dumped in various areas of the ward to feed pigeons. We want to remind neighbors that feeding pigeons is a violation of the City of Chicago ordinance.
As a reminder, dumping food in public spaces attracts rodents, creates sanitation issues, and negatively impacts the surrounding area. We ask all neighbors to help keep our ward clean and safe by refraining from feeding pigeons and reporting large food dumping when you see it.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our community healthy and welcoming for everyone.

|
Our second houseless neighbor picnic of the year was a big success! I had the chance to connect with neighbors in the area, share housing and meal resources, and welcome Moyo from Swedish Hospital, who joined us for the first time. These outreach picnics are an important way we bring resources and real connection directly to neighbors who need them most. It’s been powerful to see our neighbors move from tents into stable housing through this work. A heartfelt thank you to Northside Action for Justice, Montrose Behavioral Health, 19th Police District Councilors, the Department of Family and Supportive Services (DFSS), Swedish Hospital, Chinese Mutual Aid, Street Samaritans, Million and One Inc, and Liberate the 46th Ward Mutual Aid for showing up and supporting our community. |

Last week, the Chicago Plan Commission approved two exciting projects in the 46th Ward - 3611 N. Halsted and 4458 N. Clarendon. Renderings of both proposed developments can be seen below.
I was proud to support the two proposals, both of which have received substantial support from the community through in-person, written, and organizational feedback after community meetings.
3611 N. Halsted
The proposal at 3611 N. Halsted is 10 stories and includes 188 residential units - 38 of which will be affordable - across nine residential floors set above two floors of parking including 77 parking spaces. The proposal also includes the removal of a curb cut on Halsted and an alley vacation of the east-west leg of the alley bound by Halsted, Addison, Waveland, and Broadway. The alley exit onto Halsted would be replaced by a green space attached to the retail tenant at the property - planned as a cafe patio by the developer.
The proposal is all-electric and features a significant number of sustainability features, including geothermal heating and cooling, 77 EV-ready parking spaces, and an extensive green roof meant to both beautify the neighborhood and enable 100% on-site stormwater retention. The developer has also committed to working with the Chicago Housing Authority to place Project Based Vouchers (PBV’s) in the building to enable deeper affordability for tenants making less than 60% of the area median income (AMI).
4456 N. Clarendon
The proposed development at 4458 N. Clarendon - called "Sarah's on Sunnyside" - would be a 54-unit, 7-story new construction permanent supportive housing development. All units, studios of approximately 460 square feet, will be targeted to women at risk of homelessness who earn no more than 30% of AMI (area median income). Building amenities will include a community room with kitchenette, a therapeutic garden, sensory room, and 24/7 onsite staffing including security and property management staff. Sarah’s Circle will provide supportive services to all tenants and will manage the property.
These two developments paired exemplify my ward office’s approach to development, which pairs market-rate developments that add to our tax base with affordable housing to ensure that every 46th Ward neighbor has the opportunity to live in high-quality housing they can afford. |

Good News, Neighbors!
Several weeks ago, the Department of Water Management began conducting emergency repairs to the sewer main on the 4300 Block of Broadway. This work is almost complete, and next week crews will repair the last section of collapsed sewer pipe at the Broadway / Sheridan intersection.
Both Broadway and Sheridan are currently open to northbound and southbound traffic and the CTA 36 bus should now be operating normally. There will be renewed detours next week to maintain safe working and driving conditions during the last phase of repairs. We will share additional details as soon as we have them.
This work will not impact residents' or businesses' water or sewer service, and sidewalks will remain open during construction.
Crews aim to complete the repairs next week and fully reopen the intersection for good following restoration; however, delays remain possible given the sometimes unclear condition of underground utilities.
Thank you for your patience over the past several weeks! |

The Clerk’s Office is proud to announce an exciting partnership with the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team that honors those who have served our country. Veterans, active-duty military personnel, members of the National Guard, and reservists are now eligible to receive one free ticket to a 2025–26 regular-season Wolves home game, thanks to this special offer coordinated by Clerk Gordon and the Clerk’s Veterans Services team.
To receive a free ticket, veterans must be enrolled in the Clerk’s Military and Veterans Discount Card Program – a free initiative that also provides access to discounts on food, auto repair, legal services, health and fitness, and more. Those already enrolled are eligible, and additional discounted tickets are available for friends and family attending the game.
Getting your ticket is easy:
Sign up for the Veterans Discount Card at cookcountyclerk.com/veterans or by visiting the Clerk’s Veterans Office at 118 N. Clark, Room 120 in Chicago.
Go to cookcountyclerk.com/Wolves to claim your free ticket and purchase additional discounted ones.
Tickets will be emailed and can be shown on your phone at Allstate Arena – no paper tickets needed!
This special offer is valid for Wolves home games through April 19, 2026, and tickets are available while supplies last.
For more information or to schedule an appointment, veterans and military can call the Clerk’s Veterans Services Office at 312-603-5788.
Let’s cheer on our Chicago Wolves—and honor those who’ve served our county and our country.
