Neighbors, we had quite the weekend! We traded our usual community events for a little dressing up and celebrating, attending two annual galas that gave us the chance to recognize some of the incredible organizations and people making our communities stronger everyday.
I joined our longtime partners at Nourishing Hope for their annual gala, where they raised over $1 million dollars to continue connecting neighbors across Chicago with food and other essential resources. The night was made even sweeter when our very own 46th Ward neighbor Karen Coleman was honored as Volunteer of the Year! Karen, we see you, we appreciate you, and we’re so happy to see you get your flowers!

I also joined the Illinois Environmental Council for their annual Environmental Leadership Dinner, celebrating the advocates, organizations, and decision-makers championing environmental work across our state. Congratulations to everyone recognized this weekend, and thank you to both Nourishing Hope and the Illinois Environmental Council for having me.

After getting dressed up for Friday night’s galas, we switched gears on Saturday and headed right back into the community for our Mobile DMV at Clarendon Park!
A huge thank you to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office for partnering with us to bring these services directly to the 46th Ward, to Clarendon Park for once again opening its doors to our community, and to every neighbor who signed up and came out to take care of their DMV needs.
We were completely at capacity, with neighbors getting help with REAL IDs, driver’s licenses, state IDs, vehicle registration, and more. The turnout made one thing very clear: there is a real need for convenient, neighborhood-based DMV services. We hear you, and we’re already looking forward to bringing the Mobile DMV back to the 46th Ward again soon!

There’s a new spot bringing some serious flavor to the neighborhood! JAMX Island Grill, recently opened its doors at 3933 N Broadway, and we joined their team to make it official with a ribbon cutting!
This Black-owned Caribbean restaurant is bringing authentic island flavors to the neighborhood, and let us tell you, the food is AMAZING!
A huge thank you to the JAMX team for inviting us to celebrate and for choosing the 46th Ward to call home. Neighbors, show our newest local business some love and catch a meal on their patio while the weather is still nice!

I also popped into Ophidian Tattoo Gallery and chatted with Patrick, owner, earlier this week. Located at 3732 N Broadway, Ophidian Tattoo Gallery officially marking three years in the 46th Ward!
Ophidian is an appointment-only tattoo studio, and the space itself is beautiful, warm and welcoming, while still feeling clean, polished, and incredibly stylish. You can tell a lot of care went into creating a space where people can feel comfortable while getting a piece of art they’ll carry with them forever.
Happy three years in the 46th Ward, Ophidian! Neighbors, keep them in mind for your next tattoo and make sure you tell them Ald. Clay sent you!

We kept the community connections going with a couple of tabling stops around the Ward! We made our way back to the Uptown Farmers Market for one of our final tablings of the season, spending some time catching up with neighbors, answering questions, and sharing resources while enjoying everything the market has to offer. We’ve loved being out there throughout the season, and we’re already looking forward to next year!
We also popped into Old National Bank for their Client Appreciation Week, where we tabled alongside other community partners and connected with neighbors throughout the day. A huge thank you to Jamie and the Old National team for inviting us and for continuing to be such a valuable community partner. We’re always grateful for our local businesses and organizations that make space for community, connect neighbors to resources, and continue to show up for the 46th Ward!

Personal PAC’s 33rd Annual Luncheon brought together advocates, community leaders, and elected officials dedicated to supporting reproductive health and access to care across Illinois. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with organizations doing meaningful work to ensure individuals and families have access to the healthcare, resources, and support they need.
Thank you to our partners at HOPE Clinic for the invitation and to Personal PAC for its continued work supporting reproductive healthcare and the communities they serve!

Before we head into the long weekend, a reminder that the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is taking over the streets of Chicago this Sunday, October 11! Thousands of runners and spectators will make their way through 29 Chicago neighborhoods, including right through our neck of the woods.

No-parking restrictions along the course begin at 1:00 AM Sunday, and vehicles left in posted zones will be ticketed and towed. Open House Chicago
Mark your calendars, 46th Ward, Open House Chicago - hosted by the Chicago Architecture Center is just around the corner! Open House Chicago is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world, opening the doors to more than 200 architecturally, historically, and culturally significant sites across 30 Chicago neighborhoods, all for FREE on October 17-18! Visit openhousechicago.org for the full list of participating sites, hours, and details to plan your weekend. We’re lucky to have sites across the 46th Ward participating this year:
BIG NEWS: The Uptown Theatre Is Opening Its Doors for Open House Chicago!

After decades of being closed to the public, our beloved Uptown Theatre is officially joining the Chicago Architecture Center’s Open House Chicago Festival, happening October 17–18! And yes, that means neighbors will have a rare opportunity to step inside one of Uptown’s most iconic landmarks!
Built in 1925, the Uptown Theatre is celebrating more than 100 years of history right here in our neighborhood. Once home to movies, concerts, vaudeville performances, and so much more, this incredible 4,400-seat theater has been closed since 1981. For many of us, it’s a building we’ve walked past countless times, admired from the outside, and dreamed of seeing come back to life.
Well, here's an opportunity to get a glimpse inside! Visitors will be able to explore the theatre's Broadway lobby and even enter its rarely accessed auditorium in guided groups. How exciting is that?!
We're incredibly proud to see so much of Lakeview and Uptown’s history, architecture, culture, and creativity represented in this citywide celebration. Our neighborhood has so many stories to tell, and it's exciting to see them getting the attention they deserve! A few important details: Open House Chicago is free, with no advance registration required. Uptown Theatre tours are scheduled for 10 AM–3 PM on both Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. Visitors will enter through the main lobby for a short guided auditorium tour, and photography will not be permitted inside. We are expecting long-wait times, so please sure to arrive early.

At 3617 N. Broadway St., a new business has joined the ward! Cooking With Cass brings neighbors together around good food, great company, and a little kitchen fun.

Owner Cassandra “Cassie” Crist took an unconventional path to the culinary world. After two decades in public accounting—working her way from Staff Accountant to Principal and earning recognition as one of Forbes’ Top 200 CPAs in America—Cassie decided it was time to trade spreadsheets and boardrooms for what she had always loved: bringing people together around a table.
Today, Cooking With Cass offers hands-on cooking classes designed to make cooking approachable, social, and fun, whether you’re comfortable in the kitchen or still figuring out which knife to use. The space also hosts themed dinners and is available for private events, making it a great neighborhood option for birthdays, celebrations, team outings, or simply getting a group of friends together for something a little different.
At the heart of it all is Cassie’s belief that food is about more than what’s on the plate—it’s a way to connect, celebrate, and create memories with the people around us.
So, if you’re looking to sharpen your cooking skills, try something new, or plan your next gathering, stop by Cooking With Cass at 3617 N. Broadway St. and see what’s cooking!

Zoning Change: 1429 W. Irving Park

Alderwoman Clay has decided to support a proposed zoning change at 1429 W. Irving Park from B3-2 to B2-3 to enable the construction of a 5-story, 36-unit apartment building on the site of an existing parking lot.
The proposed building would include 4,400 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 36 apartments on the second through fifth floors – divided among 8 three-bedroom units, 20 two-bedroom units, 4 one-bedroom units, and 4 studio apartments. Seven of the 36 apartments (20%) would be designated as affordable apartments through Chicago’s Affordable Requirements Ordinance. The development would include 25 vehicular parking spaces accessed off the alley and 36 bicycle parking spaces.
The development team shared information about the project and responded to questions from neighbors at a quarterly meeting of the Southport Neighbors Association (SNA) at Uncommon Ground (3800 N. Clark) at 7pm on Monday, July 27. After the presentation and Q&A, SNA members voted and provided the project with their enthusiastic support. The Lakeview Roscoe Chamber of Commerce also provided a letter of support for the project, as did the majority of neighbors that provided feedback through our online survey.
In response to feedback from neighbors, the developers have committed to adding a mural on the east-facing facade to replace the existing public art that will be covered up by the building and to adding several sustainability features to the building. These sustainability features include, but are not limited to: The building is currently planned to be an all-electric building. 60%+ green roof coverage with controlled flow detention of stormwarter. On-site EV charging for at least 30% of parking spaces. Bird-friendly design and material. Permeable pavers or concrete for onsite gangways and surface parking to minimize stormwater runoff.
The proposal adds dozens of family-sized units to an area with significant demand for housing and high-quality transit access (a 10 minute walk away from both the Brown and Red Line) within two blocks of Blaine Elementary, while providing additional ground-floor retail on Irving Park and a relatively high parking ratio. These new homes will bring new customers to local businesses, new friends and family for existing neighbors, and more tax revenue to our city at a time when it is much needed.
The development team anticipates approximately a six month process for rezoning and permitting, followed by an 18-month construction timeline; if all permitting, financing, and construction timelines hold, we expect construction to begin Spring 2027 and the budling to be done around Fall 2028.
To learn more about the proposal, check out the 46th Ward’s Zoning and Development page! |

| | | Alley Reconstruction - Leland / Eastwood / Clarendon!
Leland neighbors, please be advised that alley reconstruction for the alley bound Leland, the Uplift Soccer Field, Eastwood, and the Weiss Parking Garage has begun. Only the North-South portion of the alley right next to the soccer field will be rebuilt and the rest of the alley will remain accessible.
This means that the majority of neighbors will retain access to their parking spaces - only neighbors living at 849-51 W. Leland will need to seek alternative parking arrangements.

Neighbors may not have alley access after September 21, 2026, please make accommodations to relocate your cars from you parking lot before then. Major construction will begin next week and is now anticipated to take approximately 2-3 weeks.
Due to construction, the following changes will occur: During construction, residential garbage will be curbside and we ask that the homeowner relocate cans to the front of the property. There will be no access to the alley for. Barricades will block all entrance to the alley. Neighbors are advised to seek alternative parking.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the Ward Office via phone (773-878-4646) or email (info@46thward.com). |

| | Modernized Traffic Signals Coming at Leland and Sheridan!
Several weeks ago, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began rebuilding the Leland / Sheridan intersection as part of a project to install modernized traffic signals at this intersection.
The new traffic signals will include pedestrian walk signs to increase safety at the intersection, and crews will also be extending the curb to reduce pedestrian crossing distances.
Crews have completed concrete work at the intersection to extend and rebuild curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. Next week, workers will begin installing the foundations for the new traffic signals, which is expected to take another 4 weeks. After installation of the new foundations, concrete restoration is expected to take another 2-3 weeks, after which the new poles will be installed and the current poles will re removed.
Due to construction delays, the new signals may not be installed and functioning until December or January of the coming year. |

| | 4600 - 4800 N. Racine Water Main Update: Restoration Continues!
In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacing the existing (more than 120 year-old!) water main and replacing all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
Crews have installed the new water main, installed all new service lines, and shut off the old water main; all underground plumbing work has been completed.
Crews began restoration work the first week of September. Concrete work to rebuild the road foundation, curbs, and gutters, has been completed.
After the completion of the concrete base, the contractors have 30 days to complete the remaining restoration work (milling and repaving the road surface and adjusting utility/drainage structures as needed). This means that all work should be completed before the end of October, leaving Racine looking as good as new before Halloween!
Separately, crews from a different contractor (G&V) are also completing several sidewalk repair/reconstruction projects on the 4700 N. Block of Racine - our goal is to leave both the street and sidewalk in great shape so that Racine neighbors can live construction-free lives for the next several years at a minimum.

New Streetlights Coming to 4600-4800 Beacon Street
Neighbors, you may have noticed more orange no-parking signs in Sheridan Park!
These restrictions are in place to enable CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractors to install new and more reliable streetlights on this stretch of Beacon. The supervising engineers anticipate this project should be complete by the end of October, as long as the weather cooperates.
Crews will install new street lights with "piggy-back" lights (which provide better sidewalk illumination) over the next several weeks. Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary. |

New Streetlights Coming to Sheridan Road (Montrose to Buena)
