Summary

In Alderman Jim Gardiner’s 45th Ward newsletter, he focuses on storm response after a severe weather event, encouraging residents to report basement flooding via 311 and to submit storm-related issues (with volunteers clearing blockages in the ward). He also highlights the “Access Edgebrook Study” for potential infrastructure improvements at the Devon/Caldwell/Central/Lehigh intersections and notes CPD’s community feedback period for the revised Community Police Mediation Pilot Program (June 2–17, 2026). Other updates include summer library programming (June 6–August 2), outdoor pool openings starting June 19, recycling center changes during the city’s recycling transition, and a reminder of upcoming 2026 beat meetings and ward office events/resources.

MESSAGE FROM ALDERMAN JIM GARDINER

Following last night’s severe storm, the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) continues to address blocked roadways, downed trees, and other storm-related hazards across the city.

To date, DSS has received more than 5,000 service requests through the 311 system. Crews have been deployed citywide and are working diligently to clear streets and restore safe passage as quickly as possible. Given the volume of requests, we ask for your continued patience as our teams work through the backlog.

Weather forecasts indicate that additional rounds of severe weather are expected today, with one system anticipated this afternoon and another this evening. As conditions evolve, DSS will continue to monitor impacts and adjust operations as necessary. We encourage residents to continue reporting storm-related issues through 311, as doing so helps us track, prioritize, and respond to requests as efficiently as possible.

We appreciate your partnership and understanding as DSS continues its response and recovery efforts.

Angels in the 45th Ward are taking initiative to clear downed branches blocking pedestrian walkways and vehicular traffic on streets.

For assistance with broken limbs please contact our office at (773)853-0799 or ward45@cityofchicago.org.

Proudly Serving,

Alderman Jim Gardiner

TOP STORIES

Experiencing Basement Flooding? Report It

If you experience water in your basement during storms, please report it to the City of Chicago. Residents can file a report by calling 311, submitting a request through the 311 app, or contacting our office for assistance.

These reports allow the Chicago Department of Water Management to inspect sewer infrastructure and help the City track flooding locations. This information is important for prioritizing future infrastructure improvements and may support assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) if a disaster is declared.

MWRD Overflow Action Alert

With periods of heavy rainfall expected, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) encourages residents to reduce water use during and immediately after storms to help prevent sewer backups, reduce flooding, and protect water quality.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Delay showers and baths when possible
  • Flush toilets less frequently
  • Wait to run dishwashers and washing machines until after the storm has passed

Taking these simple steps can help reduce pressure on the sewer system during heavy rain events.
