June 12, 2026 Dear Neighbors,
I hope you have been staying dry and finding a way to enjoy the season despite the unpredictable weather this past week. Thank you again to the many City workers, first responders, and utility crews continuing to work around the clock to keep our neighborhoods safe. As crews respond to storm-related service requests across the city, I’ve noted a few reminders below: If you encounter storm-related issues such as downed trees, blocked roadways, flooding, damaged infrastructure, or traffic signal outages, please report them to 311. To avoid long wait times, download and use the CHI311 app or submit requests online. If you encounter a downed power line, stay far from the area, immediately contact 911 and ComEd’s emergency line at emergency line at 800-EDISON-1 (1-800-334-7661). Never assume a downed wire is safe. For power outages, visit ComEd’s outage map to check the status of your area.
This week’s storms underscored the importance of investing in services and personnel that keep our city running, because our city budget is more than numbers on a page; it is the mechanism through which we fund the services our communities rely on every day.
Last weekend, I joined Mayor Brandon Johnson, Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, and neighbors from across the city at Truman College for a Budget Engagement Roundtable. These conversations are an important opportunity for neighbors to learn about city department budgets, share their budget priorities, and help shape the City's budget process.Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their perspective, and took the time to help shape the future of our city.

From there, I traded budget discussions for creativity at the Uptown Art Walk, one of our neighborhood's most beloved annual traditions. Organized by the Uptown Chamber of Commerce and community partners, the Uptown Art Walk brings together more than 100 artists, local businesses, musicians, and neighbors for a day dedicated to celebrating the creativity and culture that make Uptown so special.
What began as a way to showcase local artists and activate our commercial corridors has grown into a neighborhood-wide celebration of the arts, inviting neighbors and visitors alike to explore local businesses, discover new artists, and connect with one another through creativity. I loved seeing Wilson filled with artwork and conversation as neighbors spent the day supporting local creatives and small businesses. Thank you to everyone who helped organize another incredible Uptown Art Walk and to all of the artists who shared their talents with our community.

Speaking of local businesses, I am thrilled to welcome Queen Yemeni Coffee to the Lawrence and Broadway corridor with an official ribbon cutting ceremony. Located at 4753 N. Broadway in the historic former Starbucks space, Queen Yemeni Coffee brings the rich traditions of Yemeni coffee culture to Uptown, serving specialty coffees, teas, pastries, and desserts inspired by generations of craftsmanship and hospitality.
Originally established in Libertyville, Uptown marks the company's first expansion and a major investment in one of our neighborhood's most prominent commercial intersections. I am excited to see this beautiful space activated once again and to welcome a business that adds to the diversity, vibrancy, and entrepreneurial spirit of our community. Congratulations to the Queen Yemeni Coffee team, and I encourage neighbors to stop by, grab a cup of coffee, and welcome our new neighbors to Uptown.

As we ease into the summer months, I invite you to attend our upcoming Community Conversation on Tuesday, June 23, from 5:30PM to 7:00 PM at Truman College. These quarterly gatherings are an opportunity for neighbors to connect with one another, hear directly from community organizations and government partners, and engage in thoughtful conversations about issues impacting our neighborhood.
This quarter, we'll focus on homelessness, housing access, local outreach efforts, available resources, and the ways we can work together to support our neighbors and strengthen our community. Whether you're looking to learn more, ask questions, or share your perspective, I hope you’ll join us for a robust and thoughtful conversation. |

Last but not least, please note that our office will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States and serves as an important opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, celebrate Black freedom, and honor the generations of resilience, culture, and contributions that continue to shape our communities today. The office will reopen on Monday, June 22, at 9:00 AM. |

This week, we're highlighting a local business that proves great style doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag. Located at 1216 W. Wilson Ave., Poor Boy Rich Taste was founded on the belief that everyone deserves to look and feel their best, regardless of budget. Owner and founder, Brandon, created the shop around a simple motto: "You can be broke and still look expensive." Drawing from his own experience creating elevated looks on a budget, he set out to build a space where fashion feels accessible, empowering, and fun.
Now celebrating two years in Uptown, Poor Boy Rich Taste has become much more than a clothing store. The shop combines affordable fashion, vintage finds, personal styling, and community-building, creating an inclusive space where people can explore and express their personal style. Along the way, the business has been featured on ABC 7 and WGN, produced multiple sold-out fashion shows, and helped countless customers gain confidence through fashion.
In addition to shopping, Poor Boy Rich Taste offers personal styling services, closet consultations, event styling, and creative collaborations. The shop also regularly hosts fashion experiences and community events that bring neighbors together.

Stop by and check them out at 1216 W. Wilson Avenue
Hours: Wednesday–Saturday: 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM Sunday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
We are proud to celebrate the small businesses that make the 46th Ward such a unique place to call home. |

Montrose Harbor Bridge Updates - Montrose and Wilson Underpasses now Open!
Good news neighbors!
Last week, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews opened up the underpasses at the Montrose and Wilson lakefront bridges. This means that runners, walkers, and bikers will no longer need to use the detours that required crossing Montrose or Wilson to travel north or south on the lakefront.
CDOT is wrapping up final paving and drainage work for the two Simmonds underpasses and expects to open them both by mid-June. All bridges are fully open for drivers; crews are finishing the final striping and landscaping work on all four bridges, and all parking will be re-striped within the next week or so. All work is expected to be fully complete - aside from final stonework - by the middle of June.
Due to material delivery delays, the final stonework will be completed over the summer and there may be 1-2 week rolling underpass closures for this final step of the project. |

Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan! In May, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began resurfacing Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster to fix the wear and tear on the street. The resurfacing project includes pedestrian safety improvements, including curb extensions and paint-and-post bump-outs opposite of “T” intersections for traffic safety.
This week, crews completed concrete work on the West side of the street and began working on the East side of the street to rebuild curbs, gutters, ADA ramps, and sidewalks. CDOT anticipates completing work on the East side of the street by the end of the week after next at the latest, and sooner pending favorable weather.
Concrete work on the east side of the street will be more extensive than work on the west side of the street and includes concrete curb extensions at Agatite, Sunnyside, Windsor, and 4848 N. Sheridan. Crews will also rebuild two driveway aprons for the commercial parking lots on the west side of Sheridan between Wilson and Montrose to improve drainage and reduce flooding at each location. That work is expected to take roughly one and a half weeks, pending cooperative weather.
Resurfacing Construction RemindersDuring construction, signs will often be posted to limit parking during workdays to enable construction access. Please move your vehicle to avoid tickets. Parking will generally remain available overnight and on weekends. Be sure to check signage.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the 46th Ward office at 773-878-4646 or via email at info@46thward.com.
If you want to learn more about the project, check out the presentation from our online briefing on our website! |

| | Water Main 4600 - 4800 N. Racine!

In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacement of the existing - more than 120 year-old! - water main and replacement of all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
As of today (Friday, June 12), crews have completed the installation of the new water main. Last week, the contractors established a second connection to the existing water system at Leland and Racine, and replaced several sewer main sections needing repair. Next week, crews will disinfect the newly installed water main - this work is expected to take place primarily between Tuesday and Thursday.
Once that work is complete, crews will begin replacing service lines to connect the new water main to homes and businesses along Racine. DWM anticipates service line connection work commencing the week of June 22.
As always, neighbors can expect to be able to park along Racine through the weekend.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the 46th Ward office at 773-878-4646 or via email at info@46thward.com.

|
Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP), announced the scheduled annual increase in Chicago’s minimum wage, a scheduled enhancement of the Fair Workweek Ordinance requirements and the full establishment of the legal rights provisions of the Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance. These changes will go into effect July 1, 2026 - to view informational flyers, Frequently Asked Questions, and public notices on Chicago’s labor laws, visit Chicago.gov/LaborStandards.
Every July 1, Chicago’s minimum wage increases per the Minimum Wage Ordinance. The minimum wage increases annually according to changes to the Consumer Price Index or 2.5%, whichever is lower.
Beginning July 1, 2026: • The minimum wage will be $17.05. • The minimum wage for subsidized youth employment programs and subsidized transitional employment programs has caught up to the full minimum wage for the first time ever and will be $17.05. • Under the One Fair Wage Compromise Ordinance, the wages of tipped workers such as restaurant servers, bartenders, bussers and runners who earn a subminimum wage of $12.96 per hour will remain steady until the next scheduled increase on July 1, 2028. Under the Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance, workers are guaranteed up to five days of paid leave and five days of paid sick leave for all of Chicago’s workers for employees who work at least 80 hours within any 120-day period.
Starting July 1, 2026, workers are able to enforce their legal rights via private right of action. Under the Paid Leave requirements: • Employees accrue at a rate of 1 hour of paid leave for every 35 hours worked (up to 40 hours in a 12-month benefit period) • Employees must be allowed to use accrued paid leave no later than on the 90th day following the commencement of employment • Employees can carry over up to 16 hours between 12-month periods (if paid leave is not front loaded). • Employees can use paid leave for any reason Under the Paid Sick and Safe Leave requirements: • Employees accrue at a rate of 1 hour of sick leave for every 35 hours worked (up to 40 hours in a 12-month period) • Employees must be allowed to use accrued sick leave no later than on the 30th day following the commencement of employment • Employees can carry over up to 80 hours between 12-month benefit periods • Employees can use paid sick leave for medical and safety reasons for themselves and covered family members
Additionally, on July 1, 2026, the Fair Workweek Ordinance will include updated compensation metrics. Employees will be covered by the ordinance if they work in one of seven “covered” industries (building services, healthcare, hotel, manufacturing, restaurant, retail, or warehouse services), earn less than or equal to $33.85/hour or earn less than or equal to $64,945.55/year and the employer has at least 100 employees globally (250 employees and 30 locations if operating a restaurant). The Fair Workweek Ordinance requires certain employers to provide workers with predictable work schedules and compensation for changes.
Chicago businesses are required to post Public Notices for the following Chicago Labor Laws at their business: Minimum Wage, Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave and Fair Workweek. The public notices are available to workers and business owners in English, Spanish, Polish, Simplified Chinese, Tagalog, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Hindi, Nepali and Urdu. To download the public notices, visit Chicago.gov/LaborStandards.
All Chicago worker protections are enforced by the BACP Office of Labor Standards (OLS). The OLS is dedicated to promoting and enforcing Chicago’s labor laws. To file a labor standards complaint, workers can use the CHI 311 system (call 3-1-1, use the CHI311 mobile app, or visit 311.chicago.gov) or complete a Complaint Form.
