6th Ward,
Wednesday's storms left many residents dealing with fallen trees, power outages, flooding, and other damage throughout our community. As city crews continue cleanup efforts, forecasters are warning that another round of severe weather is possible later this afternoon and evening.
Our office is working closely with City departments and encourages residents to report storm-related issues through 311 and our office to get services as soon as possible. If possible, include photos and the exact location. For downed power lines, stay away from the area and call 911 and ComEd immediately.
Please be patient as city crews respond to service requests across Chicago. We are grateful to Ward Superintendent Smitty and all the city workers who have been working tirelessly to keep our neighborhoods safe.
I also encourage residents to sign up for emergency alerts from the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, ComEd, and the CTA. Receiving timely updates can help you stay informed about changing weather conditions, power outages, and transportation disruptions.
Most importantly, stay weather aware and check on neighbors who may need assistance, especially seniors and those living alone.
Here are some power outage tips:
- Keep a flashlight and other emergency supplies handy in case of power outages.
- Check the fuse box to see if there is a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.
- If you determine that a fuse or circuit breaker needs to be replaced, turn off all large appliances or unplug them before replacing a fuse or a breaker to avoid damage to the electrical system.
- Check your neighborhood to see if others are without power.
- Call to report the power outage. Call only once to keep the line open for other customers.
- Check refrigerator to ensure that food does not go bad and cause food bourne illnesses
- Discard any food in your freezer that is over 45 degrees.
- If you rely on electric medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, ventilators and oxygen compressors, plan ahead by talking to your medical supply company about getting batteries or a generator as a back up power source.
We appreciate your understanding.
