June 05, 2026 Dear Neighbors,
Happy last day of school to all of our students, teachers, school staff & volunteers! I had the privilege of celebrating several graduating classes across our community this week, including serving as the keynote speaker for Walt Disney Magnet School's graduation ceremony. It was an honor to recognize the hard work, resilience, and accomplishments of so many young people as they take the next step in their journeys.

On Wednesday, I joined 48th ward Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth for a panel discussion about housing hosted by A City That Works. It was a great opportunity to connect with neighbors, discuss the future of housing in our communities, and share updates on efforts to create more housing options across Chicago. Thank you to everyone who came out to Pasteur in Edgewater, asked thoughtful questions, and participated in a productive conversation about how we can continue building neighborhoods where people of all walks of life can live, work, and thrive. |

As we welcome the start of summer, Chicago has so much to offer families looking to stay active, engaged, and connected. Whether you're planning beach days, museum visits, or trips to your local farmers market, there are countless free and low-cost opportunities to enjoy throughout the city. We've gathered a few resources below to help you make the most of the summer months ahead.
Chicago's public libraries offer summer reading programs, educational activities, and resources to help prevent summer learning loss. Young people can also explore programs, events, and job opportunities through My CHI. My Future, the City's one-stop hub for out-of-school opportunities.
For families looking to get out and explore, Chicago's Museums in the Parks system offers free admission days for residents throughout the summer. Many local libraries also provide free museum access through the Digital Museum Pass program. In addition, our office offers access to a Constituent Museum Pass, which provides one family with up to four free museum admissions per day. This resource is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Drop by or email us to check it out!
Summer is also a great time to enjoy everything our city has to offer outdoors. Browse the DCASE Calendar for free festivals, concerts, performances, and neighborhood events happening across Chicago. Millennium Park's summer programming and Night Out in the Parks are also underway, bringing free arts and cultural experiences to communities throughout the city. Speaking of parks, Chicago Park District offers summer camp starting June 22nd - July 31st and registration is still open. Our community park Clarendon, has open slots!
And don't forget to visit one of Chicago's many farmers markets this season. It's a great way to support local vendors, enjoy fresh produce, and connect with neighbors while taking advantage of free family-friendly programming and entertainment.
Speaking of farmers markets, the Uptown Farmers Market is officially back for the season and already off to a fantastic start. This year, you'll also find our office participating in the Sidewalk Social area, a dedicated space for community engagement where neighbors can connect with local organizations, learn about available resources, and stop by to say hello.
Our first market of the season was this week, and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to kick things off. We're looking forward to spending the summer connecting with neighbors, supporting local vendors, and enjoying one of Uptown's favorite seasonal traditions.

| There are some places you walk into and immediately feel taken care of, and Tiztal Cafe (4631 N. Clark St) is absolutely one of them.
My office had the chance to sit down with Teresa, the owner of Tiztal, this week and hear more about the story behind one of Uptown’s favorite breakfast and brunch spots. Originally from Mexico, Teresa has lived in Chicago for over 30 years, with chapters of her journey taking her through California, Utah, flea markets, juice bars, and eventually right here to Uptown. Before Tiztal, she ran a juice bar for 17 years in the Mega Mall from opening day until it closed, later building a loyal following through fresh juices at a Utah flea market before teaming up with a friend to bring food into the mix. After a few years of partnership, Teresa became the sole owner and has been pouring love into Tiztal full time since its opening in 2008.

And honestly? You can feel that love the second you walk in. The space feels warm, welcoming, and deeply cared for. Teresa carries that same energy too, equal parts strict and incredibly sweet, with the kind of presence that makes you feel like you’re in good hands. The restaurant is family-run, community-rooted, and built around creating an experience people remember. She shared that one of the things she loves most is hearing customers come back and tell her how much they enjoyed their time there, and based on the packed tables and loyal regulars, it’s easy to see why.
Their famous chilaquiles are the standout favorite (and according to just about everyone, some of the best in the city ), but neighbors also rave about the fresh juices, oatmeal shakes, garlic potatoes, and warm hospitality.

Tiztal is open Thursday through Tuesday from 8 AM to 3 PM and closed Wednesdays.
Please continue showing this small business some love. Spaces like Tiztal are part of what makes Uptown feel like home

Montrose Harbor Bridge Updates - Montrose and Wilson Underpasses now Open!
Good new neighbors!
Last Friday afternoon, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews opened up the underpasses at the Montrose and Wilson lakefront bridges. This means that runners, walkers, and bikers will no longer need to use the detours that required crossing Montrose or Wilson to travel north or south on the lakefront.
CDOT is wrapping up final paving and drainage work for the two Simmonds underpasses and expects to open them both by mid-June. All bridges are fully open for drivers; crews are finishing the final striping and landscaping work on all four bridges, and all parking will be re-striped within the next week or so. All work is expected to be fully complete - aside from final stonework - by the middle of June.
Due to material delivery delays, the final stonework will be completed over the summer and there may be 1-2 week rolling underpass closures for this final step of the project.

Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan!
In May, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began resurfacing Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster to fix the wear and tear on the street. The resurfacing project includes pedestrian safety improvements, including curb extensions and paint-and-post bump-outs opposite of “T” intersections for traffic safety.
This week, crews began concrete work on the west side of the street to rebuild curbs, gutters, ADA ramps, and sidewalks, where needed. CDOT anticipates completing work on the west side of the street next week and switching to the east side.
Concrete work on the east side of the street will be more extensive and include concrete curb extensions at Agatite, Sunnyside, Windsor, and 4848 N. Sheridan. Crews will also rebuild two driveway aprons for the commercial parking lots on the west side of Sheridan between Wilson and Montrose to improve drainage and reduce flooding at each location. That work is expected to take roughly one and a half weeks, pending cooperative weather.
Resurfacing Construction Reminders
During construction, signs will often be posted to limit parking during workdays to enable construction access. Please move your vehicle to avoid tickets. During construction, signs will often be posted to limit parking during workdays to enable construction access. Please move your vehicle to avoid tickets. | | Water Main 4600 - 4800 N. Racine!

In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacement of the existing - more than 120 year-old! - water main and replacement of all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
As of today (Friday, June 5), crews have completed the installation of the new water main. Last week, crews successfully pressure-tested the new water main, completed some sewer repairs, and connected the new main to several fire hydrants. Next week, the contractor will work on disinfecting the new water main, establishing a second connection to the existing water ssytem at Leland and Racine, and replacing several sewer main sections. This work will not require a water shutoff, but will interrupt traffic at the Leland / Racine intersection.
Once this work is complete, crews will begin replacing service lines to connect the new water main to homes and businesses along Racine.
As always, neighbors can expect to be able to park along Racine through the weekend. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns! |
