Summary

Alderman Timmy Knudsen (43rd Ward) issued a severe weather alert for Chicago after Wednesday’s storms caused downed trees, flooding, power outages, and wind damage, warning of another possible round Thursday afternoon/evening. The newsletter urges residents to report storm issues via 311 (and warns to call 911/ComEd for downed power lines) and to sign up for real-time updates from OEMC, ComEd, and CTA, noting ward support and that cooler weather is expected by Sunday. It also lists 43rd Ward office hours (M–F 9am–5pm and Sat 10am–12pm) and provides contact information for the public service office.

Dear Neighbor,

As many of you experienced firsthand, Wednesday's storms brought significant impacts across Chicago, including downed trees, power outages, flooding, and wind damage. Some areas saw wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, with more than 200,000 ComEd customers affected by outages at the peak of the storm.

Unfortunately, forecasters are warning that another round of severe weather is possible Thursday afternoon and evening. Current forecasts indicate the greatest threat will occur between approximately 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with the potential for damaging winds, heavy rainfall, hail, and even isolated tornadoes. Additional rainfall could also lead to localized flooding in some areas.

Our office is in communication with City departments and encourages residents to report downed trees, flooding, traffic signal outages, and other storm-related issues through 311, or by contacting our office (photos are highly encouraged and greatly help our office with reporting). If you encounter downed power lines, please stay clear of the area and contact 911 and ComEd immediately.

Residents should also be aware that City crews will likely be stretched thin over the coming days as they respond to thousands of storm-related requests across Chicago, particularly those involving fallen trees and large branches.

We also want to extend a special thank you to our Ward Superintendent, John, who stayed in the ward late into the evening helping address issues after the storm and was back on the job first thing this morning. We are grateful for the dedication of the city crews who step up during events like these to help keep our neighborhoods safe.

I would also encourage residents to sign up for alerts from the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), ComEd, and CTA so you can receive real-time updates about severe weather, power outages, emergency notifications, and potential transit service disruptions. Having multiple ways to receive information can make a significant difference during rapidly changing weather conditions.

Most importantly, please stay safe. If you know neighbors who may not receive these updates, especially older adults, individuals with disabilities, or others who may need additional assistance, please consider sharing this newsletter and checking in on them.

While another unsettled day is possible Saturday, the good news is that cooler and more comfortable weather is expected to return by Sunday.

Stay safe,

The 43rd Ward Public Service Office
